The trumpet was playing ‘Taps’, letting everyone know that the battle was over, all the men with their hand upon their heart.
The ‘Taps’ ended, and all the people started to applaud and cheer, Hayley along with them.
She smiled and turned tiredly, knowing that now she had to go, but as soon as she looked in front of her, her jaw literally dropped.
“Are you surprised?” Chad asked, smiling widely and opening his arms, Josh right behind him.
He kissed her and Josh tried to look somewhere else, Hayley was still puzzled and dumfounded.
She looked at Josh and then back to Chad, perplexed “What are you doing here?”
“Well, I came to deliver your fiancé.” He managed to say with a smile but Chad frowned, turning to him “I think she was talking to me.”
“Josh…” he looked at her, biting his lip “Must be exhaustin'…”
The both frowned toward him “What?”
Josh chuckled lightly, staring right into her green eyes “Livin’ a lie”
Chad turned to Hayley, perplexed, he really had no idea of what they were talking about.
“What's he talking about?”
Josh snorted “You and I are in love with two different people” and with a last glance toward Hayley he walked away, not even saying goodbye.
Chad looked at her, still confused “Is he a second cousin?”
Hayley breathed in and out deeply, she knew she couldn’t hide it anymore, not from him.
She looked at him, trying to keep calm “He’s my husband” she said, staring into his eyes.
“I mean, my ex husband”
Chad eyes widened “You married your cousin?! Jesus Christ Hayley” she readily shook her head
“What? No, I came down here to finalize my divorce-“ before she could get any further, a horse walked near them, her father getting off of it.
“Hey, darlin', thought that was you” he looked at Chad “Must be your new someone” he handed his hand toward him “Joey Williams, glad to meet you”
Hayley felt her heart skip a beat as Chad looked astonished at her, now connecting all the pieces.
“Hayley Williams” he whispered, incredulous.
He shook his head, an indignantly expression on his face, and with a loud snort he walked away; maybe his mother hadn’t been so wrong about her.
“Chad, wait” he heard behind him, but he tried to avoid her in all the ways, till it wasn’t possible anymore.
“You don't understand! This is not who I am anymore!” Hayley cried, grabbing his arm.
Chad turned to her, disappointment and pain reflected into his eyes “Look, I don't know who you are or what else you lied about, but I know one thing” he looked at her, serious “there is a Lear Jet in Mobile, and I am on it.”
Hayley sighed deeply as he walked away without any other word, tears now filling her emerald eyes.
Cristi was trying hard to not say anything to her daughter as she was sitting lifelessly on the couch, she knew in that moment she didn’t want any advice, so she simply kept cutting some plums for her jam.
Hayley forced a smile, sighing “I know you're thinkin' I spoiled things good this time.” She said, her voice almost a whisper.
Cristi shook her head slowly, frowning “Oh, hon, don't go accusin' me of thinkin'… I ain't done anything of the sort” she sighed “Anyway, spoiled's in the eye of the beholder... Iike these plums here. Some people might call them "spoiled"... but I think that, um, these almost-ruined ones sometimes make the sweetest jam.” she ended, forcing a smile.
Hayley turned her head in her direction “Do you need any help?”
Cristi looked up to her with a thoughtful expression, before smiling sweetly toward her daughter “Why not”
“It was kind of fun seeing Daddy up there, surrendering.” Hayley said while mashing some plums into a bow.
“Yeah… he sure does have a flair for the dramatic. You certainly don't get it from my side of the family” Cristi said, chuckling lightly and walking toward Hayley with some to-fill jars.
The main door opened, her father walking in.
“Hey, y'all, look who I found walkin' down l-58.” he announced, soon Chad entered from the door, walking slowly.
Hayley froze, her mouth open.
“Hi” she breathed out, her hands were shaking “I thought you'd be halfway to New York by now.”
Chad nodded “So did I.”
Cristi looked at the two “If I'd known company was comin', I'd have put on the dog.” She said, trying to rest the little tension in the air.
Chad frowned at her sentence, not getting its meaning, and Hayley soon tried to deconcentrate him from that by finally introducing him her real family.
“This is my mama, Cristi” she said, her voice trembling.
He smiled politely toward her “Hi”
“She makes the best jam in three counties” Hayley told him, smiling, her mother pushed her lightly with her elbow.
Joey scoffed, reminding her his presence, and Hayley looked at him, nodding “Oh, and my dad, Joey… you -- you already met him.”
“And this is our home.” she breathed out, looking around the humble house “This is where I grew up” she ended, her eyes glossy.
Chad breathed in deeply, forcing a smile “Well, it's a pleasure meeting you both. I'm...Chad Gilbert... Hayley's fiancé –“ he stopped, clearing his throat “well... that is... if -- if she'll still have me.”
Cristi smiled sweetly as Hayley puzzled, a shiver ran roughly along her spine.
Chad took a step closer toward her, sighing “Look, Hayles... I really don't care what happened down here. So...you have a past but… I mean, who doesn't?”
I looked down, sighing, and then up again, meeting her gaze “What I need to know is… if there is a place for me, in your future.”
“Oh, good Lord, that is the sweetest thing.” Cristi breathed out, enchanted from Chad’s words.
Hayley smiled shyly, till her mother lightly pushed her from her back “Oh, c’mon”
Hayley nodded and walked toward Chad, soon ending wrapped into his bid protective arms.
Cristi smiled happily at the view “Oh! Hello, New York City!” she sang, Joey gave her a perplexed look “Woman, what the hell you gassin' about?”
“Well, sir... “ Chad mumbled, his arms still around Hayley “my mother happens to be the mayor up there and, uh, she'd like nothing better than a big, snazzy New York wedding.”
Joey frowned “Oh, hum, yeah… I suppose I can take off work.” Hayley bit her lip and turned to face Chad “Chad, l, um... actually, I was thinking, maybe we could have the wedding here.”
Chad frowned “Here”
“In my hometown”
Chad glanced around quickly, lowering his voice tone “Look, Hayles, if you're worried about the money-“ Hayley readily shook her head “It's not about the money, Chad... not down here.”
Chad smiled in understanding “You know... a lot of people are expecting us to get married in the city, but I think a nice, quiet, country wedding is just the ticket.”
He turned to her parents “Joey... Cristi , if you -- if you folks could take care of the rehearsal dinner, I'd really like to take care of the rest.” They looked at each other and Joey nodded “Well, I think we could cover that.” Hayley smiled widely, staring at her parents, her eyes glowing of happiness.
Cristi smiled, walking next to Joey “Heck, how many times does your only daughter get married?”
Hayley looked down and silence filled the room, Joey turned his head perplexed toward Cristi who readily corrected herself “Hum… other than before.”
“So I’ll call you once I’ll be done with telling it to my mother” Hayley nodded, even if she had to admit a strange feeling was pushing into her chest. She knew Chad’s mother and her hate toward her, she would have never accepted her lie and her true origins.
Chad noticed worry cover Hayley’s face “Hey, I love you, that’s all that count, alright?” she quickly nodded, staring up at him and leaving his arms free to hug her.
“And till the end she’s gonna love you, too, just for who you are” Hayley smiled into his shoulder “I’m so lucky to have you” he glanced at her “What’s? I am the lucky one, here”
As soon as Chad’s lips brushed lightly against Hayley’s the jet’s pilot walked toward them.
“Mr Gilbert, we should go if we need to get in time in New York” Chad nodded “I’m coming” he turned back to Hayley with sorry eyes “I gotta go” he kissed her cheek “hear you soon, I promise.”
Chad gave her a last glance and he walked toward the private jet, waving a last time to Hayley.
She sighed, waving back, still worried.
“Yeah, hear you soon.”
